Ingredients
Let’s gather all the ingredients needed for this Apple Spoon Cake. Here’s what to gather:
- Apples – The star of the recipe, apples provide natural sweetness and a tender texture as they bake. Choose a variety that holds up well in the oven, such as Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Braeburn.
- Sugar – Adds sweetness to the cake and helps caramelize the apples, enhancing their natural flavor.
- Ground Cinnamon – A warm, aromatic spice that pairs perfectly with apples, giving the cake its classic fall-inspired flavor.
- Butter – Creates a rich, moist cake while adding a touch of buttery flavor to complement the apples and cinnamon.
- Eggs – Help bind the ingredients together and contribute to the cake’s soft, tender texture.
- All-Purpose Flour – The base of the cake batter, provides structure while keeping the cake light and spoonable.
- Baking Powder – Gives the cake a gentle rise, creating a soft and fluffy texture.
- Whipped Cream – A light and creamy finishing touch that balances the warm cake and adds a bit of indulgence to each bite. Check out my easy and delicious homemade Whipped Cream Recipe.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a different type of baking dish?
Absolutely! While the recipe specifies a 12×8-inch baking dish, you can use alternatives like a 9×9-inch square pan or a 9-inch round cake pan. Keep in mind that using a different size or shape may affect the baking time slightly, so start checking for doneness a few minutes earlier.
What varieties of apples work best for this cake?
Opt for firm apples that hold their shape during baking. Granny Smith apples offer a tart contrast to the sweet batter, while Honeycrisp and Braeburn provide a balanced sweetness. Feel free to mix different varieties to add depth to the flavor.
How should I store leftovers, and how long will they keep?
Store any leftover cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days or refrigerated for up to five days. To enjoy it warm, reheat individual portions in the microwave for about 20 seconds.
Can I add nuts or other spices to the recipe?
Absolutely! Please do! Chopped walnuts or pecans can add a delightful crunch. Additionally, spices like nutmeg or allspice can complement the cinnamon and enhance the overall flavor. Fold in about half a cup of nuts and a pinch of additional spices into the batter if desired.

Thanks, Michael. It is NOT cool where I live but this is perfect to bake early in the day for a nice and homespun dessert at the end of summer. Thank you!
Hi there! Was wondering about the apples for this recipe, I have frozen apples from my tree that I would like to use for this recipe. Do you recommend and if so, what tips? Thanks so much.
This is the only way I’ve made this recipe so I’m sorry but I don’t have any advice for using frozen apples.

This looks phenomenal but it’s wayyyy too much sugar for me! I love apple anything and especially a cobbler. This cake, well sugar or not I’m making it! This looks like it would go nicely with Easter dinner so I think I will be serving this up! At least I won’t have to eat the whole thing by myself…lol! The mini crème brûlée looks fab too!
You’re welcome to try and adjusting the sugar amount. Happy baking.
