This Homemade Margarita Mix is a delicious and easy recipe for making margaritas at home. Just add tequila!
When it comes to cocktails, margaritas have always had a special place in my heart. They’re fun, festive, and somehow feel like an instant celebration—whether it’s Taco Tuesday, a summer evening on the patio, or just a regular old Thursday. Over the years, I’ve found myself craving that classic margarita flavor, but without the overly sweet, artificial taste that comes from so many store-bought mixes.
This past Sunday I took a little trip to visit my mom for Mother’s Day. Since she’s the one who normally does the cooking, my brother and I devised a plan so she wouldn’t have to cook. He made steaks, and I supplied all the fixings, including a big bottle of this Homemade Margarita Mix.
(Just in case you’re curious, my side dishes included these potato and bacon kabobs, this arugula salad, a big appetizer plate, and my mason jar key lime pies.)

Knowing that Mom likes margaritas, I thought they would be perfect for our toast to her on Mother’s Day.
Because fresh is usually best, I wanted to figure out how to make my own margarita mix and avoid the store-bought variety. To my surprise, I discovered that making a large batch of margarita mix at home is easy!
There’s something satisfying about mixing up a batch yourself and knowing exactly what’s in it. Once you try this, I think you’ll be hooked too. Whether you’re hosting a party or just winding down with a cocktail at home, this mix is going to be your new go-to.
It’s so easy that I even made a strawberry margarita mix! It’s amazing too!
Why You’ll Love this Recipe
- It’s made with fresh, simple ingredients. No mystery syrups or artificial flavors—just water, sugar, and freshly squeezed citrus. The brightness from the lime and lemon juices really shines through and gives this mix a clean, crisp flavor that store-bought versions just can’t match.
- It’s surprisingly easy to make. If you can boil water and squeeze a few limes, you’re in business. The process is quick and straightforward, which means you can have a big batch ready to go without much effort.
- It’s perfect for parties or just keeping on hand. The mix stores well in the fridge for up to a week, so whether you’re prepping for a gathering or just want to have margarita nights at the ready, this recipe makes it simple. Plus, it yields enough to serve a crowd—about 20 drinks.
- It gives you full control over flavor. Want it a bit more tart? Add extra lime. Prefer it sweeter? Adjust the sugar to your liking. You can also play around with your favorite tequila or orange liqueur to make it your own every time.
If you enjoy margaritas, you’re in luck because I have a blog post dedicated to my favorite margaritas recipes. I know you’ll find a few new recipes to love.

Ingredients:
- Water – Used as the base to create a simple syrup that blends everything together without overpowering the citrus.
- Sugar – Adds just the right amount of sweetness to balance out the tartness of the fresh lime and lemon juices.
- Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice – The star of any margarita; lime brings that classic tangy, citrus flavor that makes the drink so refreshing.
- Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice – Lemon adds a bright, slightly sweet layer of citrus that rounds out the lime and gives the mix a little more depth.
One important note: For the most flavorful margarita mix, I recommend using freshly squeezed lemon and lime juice. Fresh is beyond compare!
You’ll also need a few things to turn this mix into a tasty cocktail.
- Tequila – You can use whatever brand you like, but a good-quality silver or blanco tequila works especially well for a clean, smooth finish.
- Triple Sec – This orange-flavored liqueur adds a subtle citrusy sweetness; I like Cointreau, but Grand Marnier is another great option with a richer flavor.
- Flaky Salt – Used for rimming your glasses, it enhances the overall flavor and gives that classic margarita presentation.
- Lime Wedges – Great for garnishing or squeezing into the glass for a little extra zing right before serving.

How to Make
- In a large saucepan, combine the water and sugar. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Bring to a boil, then remove the syrup from the heat, and allow it to cool.
- Once cooled, mix the syrup with the lemon juice and lime juice. Chill once more.
- Store covered in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Voila! The recipe makes 8 cups. Based on the serving size listed about this should make about 20 margaritas.

How to Use
For a classic margarita, I use:

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does homemade margarita mix last in the fridge?
It will keep for up to one week when stored in an airtight container. Be sure to give it a quick shake or stir before using, especially if it’s been sitting for a few days.
Can I customize the margarita mix with other flavors?
Yes! This mix is a great base for creative spins. Try blending in pureed fruit like strawberries, mango, or watermelon, or experiment with flavored tequilas and liqueurs to switch things up. Just keep the main mix simple, then layer in flavor as you serve.
Can I make a non-alcoholic version with this mix?
Absolutely. This mix on its own is just citrus and simple syrup, so you can add sparkling water or a splash of club soda for a refreshing mocktail. It’s great for parties when you want to have something fun and festive for everyone.
What type of container is best for storing the mix?
I recommend a glass bottle or jar with a tight-fitting lid. It keeps the flavor fresh, and it’s easy to pour from when you’re ready to make a drink.
Can I scale the recipe up or down?
Definitely. This recipe is easy to halve if you’re making margaritas for just a couple of people, or double if you’re prepping for a larger crowd. Just keep the ratios the same, and you’re good to go.

I’m saving this recipe! I thought it might be a bit sweet for us so I backed off the sugar a bit and increased the tequila a bit. Turned out great. So much better than the neon green ones you can buy in the store.
I’ve made this a couple of times and what a timesaver! I do like to top the glass with several ounces of La Croix Key Lime sparkling water. Extra Yum!!! Thanks Michael!
